Matt was born in Ruston, Louisana, and raised in both Louisana and Winston-Salem, North Carolina.  He attended the University of Tennessee at Knoxville for his freshman year and transfered to Appalachian State University where he earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology in 1997.  In 2003, Matt earned his law degree from the Unversity of Tulsa College of law, where he served as an editor of the Tulsa Law Review.  He joined Sigmon Clark following a two-year clerkship with the Hon. Lacy H. Thornburg, a US District Court Judge for the Western District of North Carolina (retired).

Matt's practice is largely focused on civil litigation in state and federal court.

Matt is a member of the American Bar Association, the North Carolina Bar, the North Carolina Bar Association, and the Catawba County Bar Association.  He has practiced in all trial court levels of North Carolina, the North Carolina Court of Appeals, and he is admitted to practice before the Western District of North Carolina and the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals.
